Following the last Google Core Update in May, the next one will already take place in December.

Google has announced the rollout of its next core algorithm update for its search engine via Twitter. The December core update will likely have a significant impact on the rankings of many websites. The previous update already focused on promoting only mobile-optimized pages. From March 2021, desktop-only websites will lose all relevance. The early timing of this update will likely surprise many webmasters.

The update is expected to be fully rolled out within the next two weeks. Fluctuations are to be expected until then. Current developments may therefore be temporary and should be monitored by website operators.

The goal of the update

Google’s primary goal is to establish general criteria for page quality. Pages with high quality should be rewarded with greater visibility. Since August 1, 2019, Google has published a  document containing tips and guidelines for improvement.

If your site is affected by the December update, you may already find answers and solutions for increased visibility there.

According to SISTRIX, dictionaries and encyclopedias are particularly negatively affected, such as wikitionary.org and urbandictionary.com. However, there is generally no evidence of industry-specific increases or decreases in rankings. There are winners and losers everywhere .
